Moving Past The Diet Plateau

When we are trying to lose weight and are dieting we sometimes reach what is called a plateau where we just can't lose any more weight. The scales just set there day after day. Although this is normal it can be frustrating and can cause a fluctuation in motivation.

When we are trying to lose weight and are dieting we sometimes reach what is called a plateau where we just can't lose any more weight. The scales just set there day after day. Although this is normal it can be frustrating and can cause a fluctuation in motivation. There are some things we can do to move past this.

Continue your efforts. Keep up on your routine but be more diligent with it. Perhaps do an extra set with each exercise and even do them an added day if you can. But, if that is not an option then be sure you are doing all your regular exercises. Have you gotten bored and are slacking off and not doing them all or not for the usual amount of time? This could be because you are doing the same thing over and over.

Mix it up. You have probably gotten into the habit of doing certain exercises certain days or in a certain way. If you mix up your routine it could just do the trick. Or intensify your present activities. Do more reps, run another 1/4 mile, take on an exercise class at the gym. Changing your present routine can help rev up your motivation as well. If you do a lot of walking try jogging a few days a week.

Add strength training. Working with the muscles will help  increase lean mass and strengthen bone tissue. This will boost your metabolic rate.

Change what you are eating. If you eat a lot of of carbs try eating more protein and less carbs. If you have a protein snack in the morning change it to a carbohydrate snack.

Change the amount of meals or snacks you eat during the day. This may mean changing the portion size of main meals. Remember your are trying to boost your metabolic rate.

Check your portions. Sometimes changing your calorie intake from day to day can be just what it takes.  If you aren't already it may be a good idea to start keeping track of what you eat and how much. Checking back over this information may show you where you need to make some possible changes. This may be just eating 1800 calories one day and then 2100 the next and 1500 the next, then start over. Keep your body guessing.

Journal on it. Keep a ongoing tribute to what you are doing. Write out what you do and how much you eat. Expressing your feelings and writing down all your efforts can be very helpful. You find areas where you could exercise more or eat a little more healthily. Why did you begin this journey? This will help reset your motivation.
